Attitude is not born, but is chosen by us all. Herb Elliott
I have been watching a fantastic show on the ABC called Sporting Nation which has looked at Australia's sporting history - not just what we've achieved as a nation, but how we watch sport and participate in it.
Tonight's episode included some brilliant nuggets of wisdom from a number of our elite athletes including Cathy Freeman, Shane Gould, Mark Ella, Pat Rafter and Herb Elliott. They all spoke about how commitment and dedication to the task in sport is fundamental to success - and how this lesson from sport can be applied to every aspect of our lives to help us all achieve our potential.
The cream of Australian sport all said they didn't participate and compete for the accolades - it was all about the goal and the achievement and pushing themselves to their best.
Herb Elliott said it best when he spoke about our attitude to sport and how it all had to come from within - attitude is not born but is chosen by us all. He made the point that everybody can improve themselves in one way or another starting right now. But there will be obstacles and there will be difficulties.
If you’re attitude is "this is a bit tough, I really can't speak to my boss about a promotion today, I'll do it next week, I'm feeling a bit tired today...….". If you choose to, you can rationalise anything to yourself. If you want to be the best at something your attitude has to be: "I’m not going to take the slightest notice of any of that negative rubbish – I’m never ever going to give into it." You hope when you make that decision that those sort of negatives go away – but they never do – it’s part of the human condition that when the positive arises, the negative arises - you’ve just got to beat it. Your success is determined by your attitude.
Maybe we're not Herb Elliott or Cathy Freeman - but we're all human with the ability to get out there and do our best. We can apply the lessons they've learned through their sport to our life and in particular to financial and career goals. So choose your attitude today - get out there, set your goals, be disciplined and enjoy getting the most out of life while you build financial success!
